Due to the role of the Kingdom of Portugal in the great European adventure which lead to the discoveries during the XV to XVII centuries and due to its expansionist policy, Portuguese was widely spread. Nowadays, Portuguese is spoken by the greatest part of the Brazilian population (180 million people) and is both the official language and language of communication in some African countries like Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Angola and Mozambique. Because of the close relationship between Galician and Portuguese, which makes it easy for speakers of both languages to understand each other, Galician is also a useful tool for communication across the luso-brazilian cultural and linguistic territory. The Brazilian variety, the most important in terms of area and number speakers is even closer to Galician than Lisbon Portuguese.
