There are many more languages spoken in Europe than the number of recognized official languages. The enclosed map does not attempt to be exhaustive but act as an example to show that the reality of languages is far more complex than it may seem at first glance and we can observe that there are more than 40 different varieties. Europe has more than 80 languages however there are over 4000 languages in the whole world! European languages enjoy varying levels of protection and the case of each minority language is different. This means that languages, such as Catalan, which are considered as minority languages, have more speakers than some official languages like Danish. There are also communities where literature and education in the vernacular language are obligatory while the situation in other communities is that there are only a few remaining speakers.
