Explore through our diagrams, the current situation of the Galician Language
The Galician linguistic community is comprised of speakers from the territories that comprise Galicia´s political and geographical boundaries and also includes small communities from outside the said limits. It is characterized as a community where there are two languages in contact. These co-existing languages are Galician and Castilian Spanish.
These data was extracted from part of the publication A Sociedade Galega e o Idioma: a evolución sociolingüística de Galicia (1992-2003), published by the Language Section of the Council for Galician Culture.
A detailed description of a sociolinguistic situation is based on a series of main variables. We can consider the basic variables as: the "mother tongue" which is the language or languages in which people learn to speak, the "first language" wich is then the language or languages in which people normally speak, the "linguistic skills" which is the ability of speakers to understand, speak, write and listen, and the "language attitudes", which are the ideas and opinions that speakers have about a language. A basic description of the sociolinguistic situation in Galicia, based on the abovementioned parameters, is presented below.
