Coloquio de 24 gallegos rústicos, by Frei Martín Sarmiento
MARCOS DA PORTELA:
1.- In the lands in Morrazo
the Galicians call
chàn de Parafita,
is the part where land meets the sky
2.- This lies on the path
From Ribeiro
to Pontevedra,
the town of Kingdom;
3.- at one league,
walking straight,
you will see that you are heading
towards the south-east;
4.- it winds its way
along the entire path,
it does not tire
nor cause suffering."
The Galician language entered a period of decadence after the splendor of medieval literature. For centuries, little was written in our language. Martín Sarmiento was a wise monk who was born in Pontevedra towards the end of the 17th century. He not only wrote works in his childhood language such as this fragment from the 1201 verses that he had written, but he was also in favor of teaching children in Galician at school, and further stated that any religious men who came to Galicia should learn the language of the people.
